Herding clinic in Norway this summer.

 – An once in a lifetime opportunity to bring your herding dog to the beautiful scenery, that is to be found at Austevoll, and a chance to work with the ancient native breed of sheep Villsau (wild sheep).

We plan to arrange several herding courses summer of 2011, provided that there are enough participants to conduct these events. Now the first dates are set, and we have possibilities to arrange more courses on demand. Please contact the instructor if you want to get a herding clinic in your country.

The courses will be for all herding breeds, and it is possible to participate even if you and the dog have no former experience or if you are a very skilled team – or if you find yourselves somewhere in between this categories. The training will be differenced according to the level of skills, and the most experienced ones within herding will be put onto tasks that will challenge their skill and ability to deal with unfamiliar problems.

The courses consist of both theoretical part and practical part. The instructor Jeanette Johnson has a master’s degree in agricultural science and has specializing in animal welfare and animal behavior. She has worked for 10 years as a professional shepherd, sheep farmer, sheep consultant and sheepdog trainer. She has experience with most herding breeds and will customize instruction and practical work with sheep to the individual shepherd and dogs qualities and herding style.

It will be emphasized that the dogs and owners have a positive and proper understanding of what is required within the herding, sheep welfare and all will be safeguarded though the course, therefore theory is an important part of the course.
